The Aga Khan University Fogarty Training Program (AKUFTP) wishes to announce an opportunity for training in epidemiology, biostatistics, and research methodology at the University of Washington (UW). Eligible applicants will need to meet specified qualifications and commit to completion of a one-year program comprising of 3 months course work at UW in Seattle, USA, and implementation of a research project on human papillomavirus (HPV) in Kenya over a period not exceeding 9 months. Three months course work is full time engagement away from regular work, while the 9 months for research project is done simultaneously together with regular work. This course is scheduled to commence in Fall (Sept/October) 2021.

Course specifications: Funding for this opportunity is through a NIH Fogarty D43 research training grant in global infectious diseases. Research work will be primarily structured around HPV considered from interest of different clinical professional disciplines. Applicants should have a clear HPV-related research study in mind, access to an HPV dataset, and have a passion for research.

Training Scope:  The successful applicant/s will work on HPV research or programmatic experience with AKU, Emory, or UW-affiliated investigators (Kenyan or US). They will complete analysis and submit completed manuscripts within 9 months of completion of class work/theory.

 

Eligibility:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in health-related discipline (e.g. medicine, nursing, global/public/population/reproductive health)
  • Full-time AKU staff based in East Africa (this includes non-academic Staff)
  • Faculty, instructors and staff from the following institutions: University of Nairobi, Kenyatta National Hospital, Kenya Medical Research Institute, and National Cancer Institute of Kenya.

 

Support:

  • Monthly Stipend (USD 2,750)
  • Tuition and fees (excluding transit pass)
  • Round Trip Airfare (1 ticket between Seattle and Nairobi)
  • Costs to obtain B-1 visa

 

Application Process: All applications should be submitted through heads of department by signing the filled training application form. A brief personal statement, not exceeding two A4 double-spaced pages (New Times Roman Font Size 12) explaining relevance of the course to one’s career advancement and updated curriculum vitae should be attached.

 

Review Process: A panel of reviewers will independently award scores based on a pre-defined weighted criteria followed by panel discussion. Candidates may be invited for a face-face interview session. Final selection from recommended candidate will be made by the Training Program Directors in consultation with Training Advisory Committee.
