UoN Afretec Partnership Creates Personalized Prosthetics in 24 Hours
University of Nairobi researchers are leading a revolutionary project that creates custom-fitted prosthetic sockets for amputees within 24 hours, all from the comfort of their homes. This innovation, achieved through a powerful partnership between African universities, hospitals, and international collaborators, is transforming lives across the continent.
UoN partnered with Kenyatta National Hospital, Dedan Kimathi University of Technology, along with international institutions like the University of Rwanda and Carnegie Mellon University. By bringing together expertise in medicine, engineering, and computer science, the team developed a solution that directly addresses a critical need in Africa. This project is an example of the power of collaboration.
Imagine an amputee regaining mobility without ever stepping into a clinic. This is the reality thanks to a cutting-edge approach that utilizes video recordings and artificial intelligence (AI) to create highly personalized prosthetic sockets. Gone are the days of lengthy wait times and expensive fittings. With this new method, 3D printing produces the sockets within a day at a significantly lower cost.
The success of this project paves the way for even more groundbreaking advancements. The team is already setting its sights on precision medicine, utilizing genetic sequencing to develop personalized treatment plans. This approach has the potential to revolutionize healthcare across Africa, delivering more effective treatments and improving patient outcomes on a large scale.
The journey hasn't been without its challenges. Bureaucratic hurdles within some institutions can slow down progress. However, the Afretec network, a collaborative effort of leading African universities, industry partners, and government bodies, is committed to overcoming these obstacles. Funded through a combination of grants, investments, and development funds, Afretec ensures the sustainability and scalability of its initiatives.
This project is a testament to the transformative power of collaboration. By breaking down barriers and working together across disciplines and borders, African institutions are tackling their continent's unique challenges with innovative, practical solutions. The University of Nairobi is proud to be at the forefront of this movement, fostering collaboration and developing impactful solutions for a brighter African future.
